The selected papers and talks reproduced in this volume in memory of Professor Ugo Ascoli–Bartoli recall the years of the pioneering research activity in the field of plasma physics and its most important application, the controlled thermonuclear fusion. The Chapters in this volume are not ordered exactly according to the chronology but they give a fairly complete accounting of the conference lectures and the scientific achievements of Ugo Ascoli Bartoli. The original manuscripts have not been modified, but grouped them according to the folIowing topics: a) Fundamentals of plasma diagnostics by optical methods (3 Chapters); b) Laser - produced plasma experiments (2 Chapters); c) Experimental assessment of plasma diagnostics by optical methods (4 Chapters); d) Measurements of plasma parameters in laboratory plasmas (6 Chapters); e) Technological achievements in the development of optical systems for plasma diagnostics (3 Chapters).Prof. Sergio Martellucci was appointed Full Professor of Physics of the University of Naples (1977–1982), and of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” (from 1982 to present). Previously, he worked with the Italian Agency for Nuclear Energy (now enea) in Frascati (Italy) on the European Thermonuclear Fusion Research Program from 1960 to 1977. He is co-Director of the Int’l School of Quantum Electronics and of the Int’l School of Fusion Reactors Technology of the Foundation and Centre of Scientific Culture “Ettore Majorana”, Erice (Italy). Prof. Martellucci graduated in Physics (1960) and a Ph.D. in Astrophysics and Plasma Physics (1965) from the University of Rome, Italy. His expertise extends from Optics, Quantum Electronics, and Astrophysics and Plasma Physics, to Physics and Technology of High power Lasers, Controlled Thermonuclear Fusion, Laser Fusion, Optical Diagnostics of Plasma, Laser Uranium Isotope Enrichment by Laser, Photobiology and Photomedicine, and Laser Safety
