This monograph concerns the theory of Generalized Bessel Functions (GBF), which are playing a crucial role in pure and applied mathematics. It is shown that the theory of GBF is the natural complement of that of ordinary BF and provides a common logical framework for other type of special functions which include non standard forms of Hermite polynomials and the Elliptic functions.GBF have been widely exploited in applications concerning classical and quantum radiation theory, crystallography, Nuclear physics, etc. The book contains a detailed description of the use of GBF in classical electromagnetism with particular reference to the theory of synchroton radiation.Giuseppe Dattoli is the Director of the Theory Group of Divisione Fisica Applicata at the C.R. ENEA–Frascati. He has worked in different research areas involving high energy physics, accelerator physics, classical and quantum optics, applied mathematics and Free Electron Lasers (FEL). Dr. Dattoli has received national and international awards for his scientific achievements and in particular he has been awarded with the international FEL–prize in 1994 at the Stanford University for his contribution to the FEL science and technology. Dr. Dattoli has taught in Italian and foreign universities and has been consultant for the construction of FEL facilities in Italy, Europe and US.Amalia Torre was born in Naples on January 20, 1957. She received the degree in physics form the University of Naples. Her research interest includes the Free Electron Laser, quantum optic and the theory and applications of special functions. For her scientific contributions, Dr. Torre has been awarded with SIF (Italian Physical Society) prize in 1986. Dr. Torre began to work at the ENEA center in Frascati in 1987 and is presently a member of the theory group of the Department Innovazione.
