It is now clear that Wiki systems may support the management of biological data and information. Specific aims of Biological Wikis include collaborative development and sharing of knowledge, as well as annotation and creation of database contents. However, several issues, referring to reliability of user contributions, assessment of quality of contributions, crediting and rewarding of users, management of bioinformatics data types, need to be addressed before they may become an effective tool. Topics addressed by the workshop therefore included biological wikis and wiki development tools together with new ideas to assess authoritativeness and quality of contributions and sites, stimulate quality contributions, manage and reward authorships, assign a scientific production value to contributions.
