In the UK today, half the population has low literacy levels and 26% of the population does not read even one book per year. In Italy the equivalent figures are 65% for low literacy levels and 50% non-readers. As shown in the literature, high rates of reading and literacy have a valuable and measurable effect on the economic growth of a country and improve human capital. At a time when literacy programmes are seeking to address this issue, Readers and Non-Readers is an invaluable insight into structural and non-structural factors which influence reading habits.Camilla Addey grew up between Italy, England and Switzerland. Her interest in reading within different cultures reflects her own multicultural background. Her field of research is social development and literacy.
