In the UK today, half the population has low literacy levels and 26% of the population does not read even one book per year. In Italy the equivalent figures are 65% for low literacy levels and 50% non-readers. As shown in the literature, high rates of reading and literacy have a valuable and measurable effect on the economic growth of a country and improve human capital. Her interest in reading within different cultures reflects her own multicultural background. Her field of research is social development and literacy.
