Daniel Pires graduated in English and German Studies and has a PHD in Portuguese culture, with a dissertation on the transgression of Bocage. He lectured Portuguese language and culture at the universities of Glasgow, Macao, Canton (Jinan) and Goa and taught in the Republic of São Tomé e Príncipe and in the Polpular Republic of Mozambique.He co-founded the Centro de Estudos Bocageanos, an institution he has directed since 1999. He is the author of works on Camilo Pessanha, Wenceslau de Moraes, Raul Proença and of the Dicionário de Imprensa Periódica Literária Portuguesa do Século XX and Dicionário Cronológico de Imprensa de Macau – século XIX. He wrote historic essays, namely O Padre Malagrida, O Último Condenado ao Fogo da Inquisição and O Marquês de Pombal, O Terramoto de 1755 em Setúbal e o Padre Malagrida.He has written on the works and biography of Bocage, having made speeches on the poet in universities, cultural associations and schools; he published the Complete Works of the Poet and recently Bocage: a Imagem e o Verbo.He collaborated in several periodicals and in the following reference books: Cambridge Guide to World Theater, Dictionary of Literature of the Iberian Peninsula, Dicionário de Fernando Pessoa, Dicionário da República, Dicionário do 25 de Abril, Dicionário de História de Portugal e Dicionário Cronológico de Autores Portugueses.
